Sample Edit

  • Up to 2000 words
  • Try to stop at a natural breaking point
  • Sample should be indicative of the whole
(Not something you’ve revised to death while leaving the rest of the manuscript untouched)
  • No commitment. No cost.

Working with someone new can be full of questions. Sharing your story, words that you’ve worked on for months or years, with a stranger can feel scary. Will they appreciate all that hard work? Will you understand the edits you get back? Will the two of you click or not?

Bring on the sample edit, designed to give you a taste of my editing style and give me a taste of your story. This can also help head off any potential conflicts: Is this story ready for a line edit, or would it be better served by a developmental edit or a proofread? Are my comments clear, or do they have too much fluff for your liking? Can we both open and read the file easily, or does technology hate us for some reason? (I typically use track changes and comment boxes in Microsoft Word.)

There is no commitment beyond the sample edit. If we both feel like we would work well together, we can schedule a full line and copy edit. If we don’t click, no harm no foul. At least we figured it out up front!
