The Long Version
Your story is fully drafted. The big plot holes have been filled. You’ve even had your best friend or critique partner read it.
Now, you could really use another set of eyes to help you really polish it up.
I list line and copy editing as a combined service because, frankly, I can’t seem to separate the two.
If I’m doing a line edit, I’m doing copy edits along the way.
Line edits are all about the feel of the story. Do the sentences flow together? Would this paragraph make more sense or have more time to breathe if you added a few details? Or maybe it’s a matter of connotation—you’ve written something “inconceivable”, and I do not think that word means what you think it means.
Line edits should also bring out your unique voice as the author. Does the protagonist sound like the protagonist throughout?
Am I feeling what the characters are feeling, or are you just telling me about it? Is your style quick? Clipped? Choppy?
Or are you more laid back, waxing poetical about the trees and streams and the storm clouds billowing on the horizon?
And what best serves the story you are telling?
Then copy edits come mixed in there, correcting pesky grammar issues and nitpicky punctuation errors. Is it “kneeled” or “knelt”? Well, either really, as long as it’s consistent. For this I use the Chicago Manual of Style (CMOS) as a guide.

As a point of reference, however, I typically book an 80,000 word manuscript for a 3-week slot.
